Title: Watch out for the Recoil: WIMPs, Neutrinos, and Neutron Backgrounds

Abstract:

Although the direct detection of dark matter looks for physics beyond the standard model and the search to measure coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering probes a standard model process, these experiments are grounded in the same techniques. The sensitive detectors of coherent nuclear scatters from WIMP dark matter and neutrinos are designed to separate nuclear and background electronic recoils. Neutron induced nuclear recoils must be differentiated from signals with other methods. I will review the neutron-nuclei cross section measurements, simulation tools and analysis techniques used to reduce neutron backgrounds for dark matter and coherent neutrino scattering.
