            We are in the process of developing and building the
                           "Mercury" laser system
               as the first in a series of a new generation of
                          diode-pumped solid-state
            lasers (DPSSL) for advanced high energy density (HED)
                            physics experiments
                at LLNL. Mercury will be the first integrated
                        demonstration of a scalable
           laser architecture compatible with advanced ICF goals.
                                  Primary
           performance goals include up to 10 Hz repetition rates,
                               10% wall plug
          efficiencies, and a <10 ns pulse with 1w energies of 100
                               J. Mercury and
          follow on kJ-class NIF companion facilities will provide
                                a near-term
           capability for numerous (up to 108) HED experiments and
                            prove the potential
           of DPSSL technology for inertial fusion energy (IFE).
