Title: Underground Science and the DUSEL Effort

Abstract:

Over the past four years the science community has explored the possibility of creating a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory somewhere in the U.S. The purpose is to provide an exceptionally deep and clean location for a variety of next-generation physics and earth science experiments. I will summarize some of DUSEL's goals in fields like double beta decay, dark matter, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, nuclear astrophysics, and geomicrobiology. I will also describe some of the site possibilities, include a horizontal-access facility within the Mt. Stuart batholith, a granitic formation famous for its long and deep tunnels.
